Transforms Cucumber Farming in Haryana: Randhir Singh Leads the Way with Higher Yields and Sustainable Practices

September 05, 2025

National, 5 September 2025: Yara India, a subsidiary of Yara International and the world’s leading crop nutrition company, continues to transform the lives of farmers through science-led solutions that improve productivity, profitability, and sustainability. A shining example is Randhir Singh, a progressive farmer from Village Kaul in Pundri, Haryana, who cultivates 40 acres of land. On his farm, Randhir grows cucumber in net houses alongside paddy and wheat in open fields. Over the past four years, he has adopted modern farming practices and Yara’s advanced crop nutrition solutions to overcome challenges and build a successful, sustainable farming model.

Like many growers, Randhir initially struggled with limited knowledge of quality seeds, crop nutrition, and plant protection. The lack of reliable advisory support compounded these problems, leaving him with inconsistent yields and limited profitability. Setting up and managing his first net house was not easy, and issues such as price fluctuations and poor-quality produce made it difficult to earn fair returns.

Randhir’s journey changed when he adopted the complete Yara Crop Plan. For cucumbers, he now uses Zintrac, Bortrac, Bud Builder, Stopit, Seniphos, and water-soluble fertilizers such as Krista-K, Krista-MKP, MAP, YaraMila Complex, and Nitrabor. For paddy, he relies on Procote Zn. Alongside Yara solutions, he also introduced innovative practices such as soil solarization before planting, raising his own cucumber nursery, and ensuring timely nutrition application based on the crop’s needs. The results were immediate and visible.

Randhir observed a 10–15% increase in cucumber yield, with healthier plants, reduced disease incidence, and more frequent pickings. His produce demonstrated superior taste, enhanced storability, longer and shelf life, and higher market acceptance allowing him to earn Rs. 2–3 more per kg than before. Compared to the village average yield of 600 quintals per acre, Randhir consistently achieves around 700 quintals per acre in summer and 300 quintals in winter. This has boosted his profitability significantly, enabling him to expand from one net house to two in just four years, while also planning new projects.

Beyond higher returns, Yara’s solutions have strengthened soil health, reduced the incidence of soil-borne diseases, and minimized the need for extra corrective measures. The improved quality of his cucumbers has eliminated marketing challenges, as traders and commission agents now visit his farm directly to purchase cucumbers Randhir’s success has also inspired over 50 farmers in his village to adopt Yara products in their net houses, resulting in better yields and higher community-wide profitability.

Speaking about his journey, Randhir Singh said, “Yara’s crop nutrition solutions have completely transformed my farming. My yields are higher, my produce fetches better prices, and my soil is healthier. What started with one net house has now grown into two, and I am working on new projects. I am proud that other farmers in my village are also adopting these practices and experiencing the same success.”

Looking to the future, Randhir believes that Yara’s precision nutrition is key to building climate-smart and sustainable farming in the region. With healthier crops, efficient use of inputs, and reduced soil degradation, he sees Yara solutions not just as tools for profitability but as vital drivers of long-term resilience and food security.
