Animal Husbandry

The livestock sector is a vital part of India’s rural economy, supporting 70 million households and contributing 4.5% to GDP and 30% to Agricultural GDP. Government programs like the National Livestock Mission and Rashtriya Gokul Mission focus on improving breeds, fodder availability, vaccination coverage, and veterinary services. In Uttar Pradesh, livestock provides crucial supplementary income for small and marginal farmers, but challenges such as low milk productivity, frequent diseases, fodder scarcity, and limited veterinary access persist.

Outcomes

Kiran’s livestock interventions have delivered strong improvements:

  • Buffalo milk yields rose to 6–15 litres/day, nearly double the state average
  • Monthly livestock income increased to ₹10,000–₹16,000 (vs. the state’s ₹3,500–₹4,500)
  • 87% vaccination coverage, over twice the state average
  • Widespread Artificial Insemination access improved breed quality and animal health

In the reporting year, Kiran focused on breed improvement, preventive healthcare, balanced nutrition, and better cattle-shed management—helping farmers boost milk yield, reduce livestock losses, and secure more stable rural incomes.
